Into the Wild expands on Krakauer’s initial research of McCandless’ personal odyssey, retracing his steps as he hitchhiked and worked small jobs wherever he ended up, usually moving on before too much time had passed. The story prompted Krakauer to write an article about it for Outside magazine and brought a blinding, nationwide spotlight down on the young man’s journey. Into the Wild follows Chris McCandless, a recent college graduate who set out in 1990 across the country with nothing but what he could carry on his back, only to be discovered dead two years later in the Alaskan wilderness 30 miles from the nearest town.

Naturally, I read the book next, and it opened up much more of the story, and the attitudes toward it, than the movie had room to fully divulge. But it also started a conversation rampant with our own opinions of McCandless’ actions, and an introspective look at our constant desire to seek out exploits in all our travels. Among The Himalayas and Seven Years in Tibet, Into the Wild provided ample entertainment for our restless minds in the quiet evenings after hiking. Neither Mel nor I had read the book or watched the movie before embarking on our two-week trek around Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit in the Himalayas, but seeing as we were in the midst of our own somewhat surreal escapade, we thought it appropriate to watch several films relating to our love of the outdoors and the Nepal region.

The publication of the book in 1996 and its 2007 movie adaptation only increased the story’s audience, even becoming a popular reading choice for high school students, and exposed it to a surfeit of opinions from people of all walks of life. To this day, it has evoked a double-edged sword of both severe criticism from expert mountaineers and hunters and glorified inspiration from amateur adventurers, sometimes with fatal consequences. I know that sounds like too much praise, but trust me it's the praise this book, and series, earns. The real-life story of Into the Wild has been a point of contention ever since it broke news headlines in 1993 after the death of its protagonist, Chris McCandless, in the Alaskan wilderness.

In my opinion the series is just as good as other famous fantasy series like the Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings, if not better. If your a fan of fantasy, you will love this book. (The warriors series currently extends to three other series after the first on with many of the same cats still being characters in the story, but focuses on new cats as main characters).

The plot is intriguing and will make you want to read the sequels. The characters are interesting and some readers may be able to connect to them. The Forest is an interesting environment that is somewhat realistic. Like I said earlier, everything in this book is perfect. If I loved this book this much and have a deep hatred for cats, you will like it too, despite your feelings about cats. Because it is very well written fantasy it will captivate you and make you want to read more, even if you hate cat's. Even though I think cats are mean nasty little fur balls, this book is still good. That's another amazing thing about this book. I am a dog owner myself, and I am still reading the series to this day. If your a dog person, don't just dismiss this book just because it's about cats. The main conflict in the story is following Rusty's apprenticeship in Thunderclan, and the growing tensions between Thunderclan and Shadowclan. Bluestar, the leader of Thunderclan, and Yellowfang, a former member of Shadowclan, who ends up being found by Rusty. Lionheart, a warrior who is Graypaw's mentor. Graypaw, a Thunderclan apprentice, who found Rusty when he was exploring. Then suddenly he get's attacked by a wild cat and the story continues from there. The characters of the story are Rusty, a house cat that decided one night to explore the forests. The setting of the story is a giant forest where the four clans of cats trained to fight, and possibly even kill to defend their territory live. So, if you can spare a bit of your time to read this review you would benefit greatly from it, because you might end up finding out about the perfect book for you. Warriors Into the Wild is the only book in my life that I have actually found perfect.
